Most people assume the tap water that comes into their home from their water utility company in Brevard County has been treated with chlorine. That would not be correct!
All city tap water in Brevard County has been treated with chloramines, not Chlorine.
What is the difference between Chlorine and Chloramines?
Chlorine and chloramines – they may sound like the same thing on the surface, but if we dive in deeper, they are two totally different water treatment treatments.
Chlorine has been traditional method of treating tap water for decades. But chlorine evaporates relativity quickly and is expensive adding chlorine through out water distribution pipes in cities as it evaporates quick and has added through out the distribution system to insure the bacteria is killed in the tap water
Chloramines are a mixture of 80% chlorine and 20% ammonia. Chloramines have become the predominant choice of tap water treatment. By mixing chlorine and ammonia, the treatment becomes much more stable and doesn't evaporate in the water distribution pipes as chlorine does. Water Utility Companies save large amounts of money in switching from chlorine to chloramines in treating the tap water in Brevard County.
Chloramines are 3 - 4 times more difficult to remove from treated tap water than chlorine and create by products that are harmful to our health! The chlorine and ammonia bond together creating the chloramines and regular activated carbon is not very effective in removing chloramines and the harmful by products of treated tap water with chloramines.
